Masu by Nic Watt, Sky City

Masu by Nic Watt is one of the best Japanese fine dining restaurants in Auckland. Choose between the a la carte menu or three different set menus’ for a dining experience hard to experience anywhere else.
Masu is set within the bustling Skycity center where you can continue your night across the road at the energetic casino or cotinue your drinking experience at any of the other restaurants within Skycity.
Ebisu, Auckland CBD
Ebisu was my first Japanese fine dining experience in Auckland and it did not disappoint. The set menu was full of delicious surprises that I would not have otherwise picked off the menu myself. Occupying a historic building in downtown Auckland, Ebisu Auckland serves authentic Japanese food with a contemporary and elegant twist; giving itself an individual flare that sets itself aside from other fine dining Japanese restaurants in Auckland.
Accompany your meal with Japan-inspired cocktails or indulge on a choice of local and imported beers. Give the gift of an unforgettable Japanese dining experience at Ebisu in Auckland or celebrate a milestone event with some of the freshest seafood.
Mad Samurai, Auckland CBD

Tucked away in Snickel Lane off Fort Lane you will find one of the best Japanese restaurants in Auckland City. Mad Samurai is a recent discovery of ours and we haven’t been able to shut up about it since. Mad Samurai is owned by the same person* who runs Khu Khu Eatery, a delicious vegan restaurant dotted around Auckland City.
At Mad Samurai you will find authentic Japanese dishes served with incredible flavours that will have you coming back for more. Perfect for sharing with friends or family, I highly recommend visiting Mad Samurai for delicious Japanese food in Auckland City.
Yume, Auckland CBD

Everything from fresh seafood to deep fried chicken, Yume Japanese restaurant has the best flavours to curb your savoury cravings.
Tanukis Cave, Auckland CBD
This central Auckland Japanese restaurant is the city’s worst kept secret. Tanukis Cave is one of Auckland’s most well known and loved Japanese yakitori bars, having been a staple Japanese restaurant in Auckland for over 28 years, Tanukis Cave is favoured by those who are heading to live shows at either the Comedy Club or Aotea center due to the staffs quick service and easy to serve and eat yakitori.
Descend the staircase from Queen Street and enter into the delicious world of Tanukis Cave, serving a wide variety of grilled meats, vegetables and seafood all while washing it down with genuine Japanese beers on tap or your choice of sake.
Tanukis Cave runs on a first in first served basis so does not take reservations; unless you are booking for a large group then there is ONE large table that can be reserved for a minimum of 8 people, maximum of 12. I have never waited for more than 20 minutes to be seated at Tanukis Cave as their seating arrangement tends to cater towards individuals, couples or small groups of four, so there is always a revolving door of patrons.
Tanuki Japanese Restaurant
Tanuki Restaurant is the sister restaurant to Tanukis Cave, and is where you can enjoy a more formal dining experience of authentic Japanese food compared to the downstairs yakitori restaurant. This central Auckland Japanese restaurant serves larger dishes and can accommodate bookings, larger groups and even private dining.
My favourite part about Tanuki restaurant, other than the food, is the Sumo wrestling they have playing on the small television high in the corner of the room. It real adds to the authenticity of this Japanese dining experience.
Tanuki Restaurant sits directly above the Cave at street level on Queen Street, the doors are side by side so make sure you book and enter the right restaurant.
Ken Yakitori, Auckland CBD and Manukau
Yet another great yakitori restaurant in Auckland. At Ken Yakitori you will discover a very warm atmosphere filled with the authenticity and love that goes into making each Japanese dish special. Yakitori dishes consists of meat and vegetables cooked on bamboo skewers over a charcoal BBQ, each dish is prepared with delicate flavours that make yakitori dining special.
Ken Yakitori opened in 1997 after the owner, Kenichi Miyamoto, had travelled to New Zealand on a working holiday visa and discovered only a small number of Japanese restaurants existed serving very unauthentic dishes. He was determined to create an authentic Japanese dining experience, so after 3-4 years of training with charcoal grills and at high-class yakitori restaurants in Japan, he returned to New Zealand and opened Ken Yakitori on K Rd on December 13th 1997. Ken Yakitori has since expanded and is a well loved restaurant that has been serving customers in Auckland CBD and Manukau ever since.
Tokyo Bay, Takapuna

Japanese fine dining in Auckland does not get much better than Tokoyo Bay; sitting on the beach front in Takapuna, Tokyo Bay serves modern Japanese cuisine; no fusion dishes, no ‘contemporary twists’, just great authentic Japanese food. With a modern indoor dining room with both upstairs and ground floor dining, the intimate outside deck offers a great opportunity to dine in the sun and make the most of the East Coast Bays sunshine. Serving lunch and dinner dishes, Tokyo Bay has been awarded Tripadvisor ‘Best of the Best’ for four years in a row.
Choose from the a la carte or set menu, the dishes on offer can be shared or devoured on your own if you aren’t that way inclined. Tokyo Bay Takapuna serves some of the best Japanese food in Auckland, whether you book a table for a celebration or you just want to explore one of the best Japanese restaurants in Auckland, you can’t miss out on this delicious authentic cuisine.
Recommended dishes from Wakuwaku
- Nigiri sushi plate
- Karaage chicken donburi
- Tokyo Bay tempura bento box
Sora, Mt Eden

In the heart of Mt Eden you will find one of the best Japanese restaurants in Auckland. Sora is a tranquil oasis of authentic Japanese cuisine, with two areas of seating options to choose from; the vibrant city facing veranda or the calm Japanese inspired back deck with a range of seating perfect for an intimate date or a large group.
The upper rear deck is bordered with deep green shelving donned with empty sake bottles, and the lower section of the courtyard is decorated with plants and greenery separating tables from booths.
This Japanese restaurant in Mt Eden is perfect for everything from a celebration to a date night; Explore the different sake options and indulge in fresh seafood for an authentic Japanese dining experience.
Sakebar Nippon, Takapuna
Starting with Sakebar Nippon, the North Shore has some of the best Japanese food for being out of the main city center. Sakebar Nippon is where you can discover authentic Japanese food with a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere. With comfortable booths that allow for an intimate dining experience, you can take your time ordering your food as you go, writing your choices on the supplied paper and pressing the buzzer for the staff to collect your order requests.
Sakebar Nippon in Takapuna is a fantastic Japanese restaurant to celebrate birthdays; give the staff enough warning and they may just sing you or your victim, I mean friend, a spirited Birthday song.
Takimi Mazesoba, Takapuna

We recently discovered Takimi Mazesoba in Takapuna, and it easily became one of our favourite easy dine in meal options. Serving handmade whole wheat and buck wheat noodles with authentic Japanese seasonings and flavours in every bite. Each bowl is served with a choice of protein, vegetables and sauces. The cozy, inviting space allows you to choose between indoor or outdoor dining, with solo dining is warmly encourage with a choice of small privacy screens at the dining spaces situated along the kitchen front.
Takimi Mazesoba is located in the Eat Street laneway between Hurstmere Road and the large carpark beside Potters Park.
Renkon, Takapuna
Renkon is my favourite go-to, lazy, Japanese dine in or takeaway meal options (how many more adjectives can I fit in there?) Sitting a few doors down from Sakebar Nippon, Renkon serves a fantastic small menu of meat on rice or noodle options. Grab yourself a free cup of herbal tea and take a seat where you can watch the world go by.
Tanpopo Ramen, Glenfield
One of the best ramen restaurants in Auckland can be found in Glenfield. This family-friendly Japanese restaurant will be the perfect place to feed a family during the depths of winter. Serving a range of range of brilliantly falvoured ramen dishes you really can’t go wrong with any of the choices.
Other great Ramen restaurants in Auckland
I may have restricted myself to 10 of the best Japanese restaurants in Auckland, but as you can’t have authentic Japanese food without Ramen that doesn’t mean I can’t add it a few notable mentions of other great ramen restaurants in Auckland:
- Ramen Takara, Browns Bay
- Daruma Ramen, Newmarket
- Miso-Ra, Helensville
Katsubi
Katsubi is less of a Japanese restaurant and more of a great takeaway option if you’re short on time and have the appetite of a starved Gorilla. Katsubi has 16 stores across Auckland, primarily located in or around shopping malls. Their smallest size bowl may look like a snack size but it packs a punch when you add deep fried crispy chicken on top of mayo drenched rice. If you are fiending for a feed then Katsubi should be on your radar.
Katsubi is one of the best places to grab a quick meal, especially if you’re a picky eater as you get to pick and choose exactly what is in your bowl – just like how you would orer at Subway. I, however, do highly recommend choosing the wasabi mayo when you make your order!
