Brisbane Public Transport Guide

Brisbanes public transport was incredible, coming from Auckland where we still have a long way to go before public transport is more relied upon than personal vehicles. We were able to easily get around the city and across the river at an extremely affordable rate.

Ferries and Busses

All Translink public transport journeys in South East Queensland, including CityCats, City Ferries and busses are a flat rate of 50 cents per person. Making public transport an incredibly attractive transport option when visiting Brisbane. The ferries bounce along the river to many different and popular parts of the city, so you can easily spend a morning being entertained by touring the city from the river, making it one of the best cheap things to do in Brisbane if you have young children who are entertained by wonderful things to see.

Cityhopper Free Ferry

The Cityhopper ferry is a free inner-city ferry service that operates between North Quay, Sydney St and New Farm.

These South Bank free activities will keep you and your family easily occupied for a whole morning if not a full day. Set off on foot from either Victoria Bridge or Goodwill Bridge and stroll along the South Bank waterfront exploring the hidden gems of South Bank.

Brisbane Sign, Streets Beach and Nepalese Pagoda

South Bank is a popular location for family-friendly activities in Brisbane, exercising and a great place to catch up with friends. A stroll between Victoria Bridge and Goodwill Bridge in South Bank will lead you through great cafes, wonderful paths covered by canopies of green trees and gorgeous flowers, a free man made swimming lagoon and the Nepalese Pagoda; an important heritage building surrounded by bush and a tranquil stream.

Window shop at Queen Street Mall

I never really understood window shopping until I came to understand consumerism – just because I like it doesn’t mean I want or need it.

Queen Street mall is an outdoor, pedestrianized shopping precinct in Brisbane CBD. This is where you can find the latest and greatest places to shop in Brisbane; duck and dive through local and international retailers, be entertained by street performers and live music, or put your feet up (not literally) at any of the bars of pubs within Queen Street Mall. Spend as little or as much as you want, and be sure to Google the Australian national holidays to see if you can score yourself a celebratory sale at your favorite retailers.

Daisy Hill Koala Centre

Free Things to do in Brisbane: A Koala sitting on a tree at the Daisy Hill Koala Centre in Brisbane.

Daisy Hill Koala Center is the best free Wildlife experience in Brisbane. This Koala sanctuary sits south of Brisbane and is one of the best places to learn about Koala conservation, three Koalas are permanent residents of this facility due to their various reasons of not being able to be released back into the wild; at 11am and 2pm every day the Koala rangers come out and present a talk on the Koalas and their conservation efforts in Brisbane. sitting in the Daisy Hill Conservation area, you can then take a stroll through the forest to try and spot any animals in the wild.

Daisy Hill Koala Center is a great family-friendly activity in Brisbane for a fraction of the cost of other wildlife experiences (because its free!)

Botanic Gardens in Brisbane

Brisbane has three beautiful botanic gardens that you can explore, whether you want to plan a picnic or are a crazy plant person (like me), or just need to fill the time before your next activity. These Brisbane botanic gardens will leave you feeling refreshed and calm before your next adventure on your Brisbane itinerary.

Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens

These are Brisbane’s premier subtropical botanic gardens, sprawling across the foothills of Mount Coot‑tha. They feature themed zones such as the Japanese Garden, Tropical Dome, arid gardens, native rainforest, and a stunning bonsai house. Visitors can explore kilometres of walking paths, enjoy panoramic views from nearby Mount Coot‑tha Lookout, or visit the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium next door. It’s a favourite for nature lovers, families, and anyone wanting a deeper look at Queensland’s plant life.

City botanic gardens

The City Botanic Gardens are Brisbane’s oldest public gardens, sitting right on a bend of the river at the edge of the CBD. They’re known for their historic avenues of trees, ornamental ponds, rainforest pockets, and peaceful riverside paths. Popular with walkers, picnickers, and office workers on lunch breaks, the gardens offer a calm escape in the heart of the city and often host community events, fitness classes, and outdoor performances.

Sherwood Arboretum

Often overlooked but absolutely beautiful, Sherwood Arboretum is dedicated to Australian native trees, with more than 1,000 species planted across its riverside lawns. It’s quieter and more relaxed than the other two gardens, making it ideal for picnics, birdwatching, and gentle strolls along the water. The avenues of towering figs and kauri pines give it a grand, serene feel, and the wetlands attract plenty of wildlife.

Roma Street Parkland

Roma Street Parkland is one of Brisbane’s most beautiful green spaces, known for its lush gardens, winding pathways, and peaceful lakes right on the edge of the CBD. Built on former railway yards, it’s now a vibrant urban oasis filled with themed gardens, picnic lawns, and scenic lookouts. Visitors can explore the Spectacle Garden, wander through rainforest pockets, or relax beside the water. With its mix of nature, art, and open space, Roma Street Parkland is a favourite spot for locals seeking a calm escape in the city.

Ibis Island

Ibis Island is a public park in Brisbane, loved for being the unofficial kingdom of bin chickens (Ibis). Located in Victoria Park / Barrambin, the park features a large pond where native wildlife thrive and frolic. Dogs are welcome but please keep them under control as we don’t want a massacre on our hands. Plan a picnic and bring your camera for some bird watching.

Even if you can’t fit Ibis Island into your Brisbane itinerary, it is well worth reading the Google reviews for a good chuckle.

Brisbane Museums

Queensland Museum and Museum of Brisbane are both free entry making it a perfect rainy day option for budget travelers.

Queensland Museum hosts a tonne of natural history, science and cultural stories, perfect for families and young children who are curious about the world. The Museum of Brisbane is located inside the historic City Hall; focusing on the city’s art, culture and social history. This Brisbane museum is smaller than the Queensland Museum but is beautifully curated and perfect for budget travelers who want a deeper knowledge of Brisbane’s identity.

New Farm market

Free Things to do in Brisbane: New Farm market is a bustling market that draws in hundreds of visitors every Saturday morning.

New Farm Market is a popular Saturday morning destination for locals and travelers. Head along to the suburb of New Farm where you will locate this boutique market on the river front. Stalls of freshly baked artisan breads, hand made goods and delicious fresh fruit and vegetables are a regular sight and sometimes more affordable than the supermarket. Grab yourself a coffee and wander through New Farm market trying the testers or getting inspiration for souvenirs to take home.

Brisbane Budget Travel Guide: A man is leaning against a railing looking out towards dense bush and a waterfall that is out of shot.

The following hiking trails in Brisbane are free to visit (yes there are one or two you have to pay for), you will however need a vehicle to get to these destinations. I highly recommend hiring a car from Europcar on Elizabeth Street in Brisbane CBD. We were able to last minute book a 1 day car hire and the process was super simple. These hiking trails in Brisbane are worth exploring and a 1 day car hire gives you the freedom to explore the city limits and get out of the concrete jungle for a day.

For more information on these hiking trails check out my other post of The Best Things to do in Brisbane; that’s where I go into more detail about each Brisbane hike.
