The Best Time to Visit Auckland

The best time to visit Auckland is all dependent on where you want to go and what you want to see. If you’re eventually heading south for the snow then late autumn and winter are your best options. But if you want to explore incredible hikes around New Zealand then spring and summer are the seasons you want to travel in.
Spring (September–November)
- Pros: Pleasant temperatures, beautiful landscapes, fewer crowds than summer so slightly cheaper accommodation. My favourite time to hike due to fewer crowds and greener trees.
- Cons: Can still have cooler, wetter days.
Autumn (March–May)
- Pros: Comfortable, mild weather, fewer tourists after summer holidays, lower prices, beautiful parks and best for budget-conscious travelers.
- Cons: Slightly cooler, potentially more rain.
Summer (December–February)
- Pros: Warmest temperatures (avg. 20-25°C) great for beach trips, hikes and festivals.
- Cons: Peak tourist season, higher prices for flights/accommodation, especially around Christmas/New Year.
Winter (June–August)
- Pros: Lowest prices, fewest tourists, great for indoor activities.
- Cons: Cooler temperatures (avg. 12-16°C) and more rain, limiting some outdoor activities.
Auckland Travel Tips
- Peak hour traffic hits between 8am – 10am and 3pm – 5pm every weekday. Plan your journeys in advance to miss the traffic!
- Bus routes dominate the suburbs north of the harbour bridge, and train lines dominate south of the bridge.
- Uber and Bolt and widely available
Auckland Accommodation
Finding accommodation in Auckland is as simple as checking out listings on Airbnb or Booking.com. There are plenty of hotels in the inner city and quite a few hostels if you want a more social accommodation experience.
Stay in Auckland CBD if you want easy access to the city, whereas the North Shore is a great gateway to beaches and only a short drive or cheap bus ride away from Auckland CBD.

Amazing Auckland Day Trips

One of my favourite things I tell tourists when they ask “what’s the best thing to do in Auckland” is ‘to get out of the city’. Now I don’t mean that in the way that Auckland is boring and dull, but if you’re visiting New Zealand for the first time you shouldn’t restrict yourself to only the concrete playground.
Auckland has so many amazing things to offer other than shopping malls and tall buildings. These amazing Auckland day trips will add a bit of sparkle to your Auckland travel itinerary. Visit the vineyards and wineries on Waiheke Island, or the white sand beaches of Mangawhai or Piha, or go further afield and embark on a hike through Karangahake gorge.
Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island is a popular summer destination for its beautiful white sand beaches, boutique accommodation and delightful wineries and vineyards. Spend a day or a weekend on Waiheke Island and indulge in some of the best wine our region has to offer. The 45 minute ferry ride from either Auckland City or Devonport Wharf makes it an easy choice for an Auckland day trip.
Mangawhai
Mangawhai is a beach side town north of Auckland, favoured for its rugged coastline and pristine golf course, Te Arai Links. Head to Mangawhai too catch some waves or explore the beautiful coastal walks.
Karangahake Gorge
Explore old gold mining tunnels and shafts and learn about the history of Paeroa. Karangahake Gorge sits between Paeroa and Waihi and is a great day Auckland day trip. Pack a pair of good walking shoes and a pair of togs to swim in the water hole at the end of one of the tracks.
Raglan
Whether you love to surf or hunt waterfalls, Raglan should be your choice of Auckland day trips to make. Raglan is a popular surf town with great cafes, pubs and bush walks. Head to Bridal Veil falls for an incredible waterfall.
Coromandel
In the Coromandel you have your choice of incredible white sand beaches, bush walks and mountain hikes. Head to the Pinnacles Hike for an incredible hiking experience, or simply explore the gorgeous beach side towns like Pauanui, Tairua, Whitianga or Coromandel Township.
Hiking around Auckland

Auckland is a great place to get introduced into bush walking and hiking. From short 45 minute hikes to gorgeous waterfalls to spending half a day hiking up the side of a dormant volcano. Auckland has plenty of hiking trails for you to discover.
Rangitoto Island Hike
The Rangitoto Island hike is a family friendly day out on Auckland’s most prominent Island. Take the fullers ferry over to Rangitoto Island from either Auckland City or Devonport wharf and embark on an adventure through native forest and volcanic rock. This is one of the best things to do in Auckland during summer, however I recommend doing this hike in the shoulder seasons as the volcanic rock surrounding the paths attract a lot of heat and makes for a very sweaty hike. Hiking to the summit can take around 45 minutes depending on your speed, but there are other trails through the forest and lava caves you can explore.
Pinnacles, Coromandel
The Pinnacles Hike is not located in Auckland, but it deserves an honorable mention for its spectacular views. Located in the Coromandel, this incredible 12km hike takes around 3 hours to get to the top. Your legs will be dying and sweat will be dripping from every pore but the views from the top make it all worth it. Make it a two day hike by staying in the DOC cabins near the top, or push your limits and make it a single day trip, although your legs will be feeling like jelly the following day.
Kitekite Falls, Piha
One of the best things to do in Auckland in summer is hike to Kitekite Falls. This Auckland hike is favoured for its family friendly track through dense native forest, the 3 tiered waterfall is a beautiful sight from either the bottom at the rock pool or from the top. Finish your hike with a refreshing dip in the fresh water – just watch out for the eels!
Omanawanui Track, Whatipu
An Auckland travel guide isn’t complete without making mention of the beautiful, semi-remote area of Whatipu. The wild west coast isn’t the type of place you can go for a gentle swim. The waves are rough, the currents are strong and rips are abundant. But that doesn’t mean you can’t head out there to explore the terrain and impressive mountain top views. The Omanawanui Track is a impressive hike with over 2,000 stairs, taking around 45 minutes to get to the trig station, you will marvel in the views out towards Manukau Heads and the rough seas that once took the Orpheus ship as victim.
Mercer Bay Loop, Piha
Mercer Bay Loop is an easy loop walk near Piha and one of the best things to do in Auckland for being an incredible photography location for sunsets. The loop walk will take around 45 minutes to an hour to complete with a slight incline. Keep an eye on children and pets need to remain on a lead as the path borders cliffs with no fences.
